The Problem

Paints and coatings release low level toxic emissions into the air for years after application. The source of these toxins is a variety of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which, until recently, were essential to the performance of coatings.

This problem is considered one of the top 5 hazards to human health and can mean that the air inside our homes, schools, hospitals, shops and offices is more polluted than the air outside!

Most paint manufacturers now produce one or more Low-VOC varieties of paint. However, they can still contain up to 49 grams of VOC per litre.

Manufacturers also charge a premium for manufacturing healthy paints and coatings.

Many so-called "zero VOC" products on the market reduce emissions that cause outdoor air pollution, but still contain a host of unregulated toxic ingredients (such as formaldehyde, exempt solvents and odour masking agents) that cause indoor air pollution.
